Gum Disease
Gum disease is a serious problem that can lead to tooth loss, and it’s important to be aware of the symptoms so you can get treatment as soon as possible.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. It is a common condition that can lead to more dental issues if not treated. Symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is usually caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Plaque can be removed with good oral hygiene, but if it is not removed, it can harden and turn into tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.
Gingivitis can often be reversed with good oral hygiene. However, if it is not treated, it can lead to periodontitis, which is a more serious inflammation.
What is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissues that support your teeth. It is a serious condition that can lead to tooth loss if not treated. Symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums, as well as bad breath. Periodontitis is usually caused by plaque that has turned into tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.
Periodontitis can often be reversed with good oral hygiene and professional dental cleanings. However, if it is not treated, it can lead to tooth loss.
